Linear Arrangement

SEATING ARRANGEMENT:

  • Arrangement is the positioning of things, persons, etc. in a particular order.
  • Seating arrangement is the manner in which people are arranged to sit around a table, in a row etc.
  • (i)  LINERAR ARRANGEMENT:

  • In a linear arrangement, thinds or persons are arranged linearly in rows or columns.
  • In a linear arrangement, the right or left of a person depends on which direction the person is facing.
  • Rules for Linear Arrangement:

  • Firstly, note down the direction in which the person is facing.
  • If it is written that a person is sitting to the left or right of a given person, then it does not necessarily mean than the person is sitting to the immediate left or to the immediatie right.
  • If it is written that a person is sitting in between two persons, then it does not necessarily mean that the person is sitting exaclty in the middle of the two persons.
  • Illustration: Five children are sitting in a row. S is sitting immediate next to P but not. T. K is sitting immediate next to R, who is sitting at the extreme left and T is not sitting immediate next to K. Who  is/are sitting adjacent to S?

    A. K and P                    B. R and P                 C. Only P                   D. P and T

    Answer: A

    Solution: We will analyse the question and then follow the following steps:

    Step 1: Draw a line and mark as many cuts as the numbers of persons to be arranged.

    Step 2: Fix the position  of R, which is at the extreme left, and fix  the position of K, which is Immediate next to R.

    Step 3: Now, fix the position of S, which is not immediate next to T and immediate next to P.

    The sequence of children are as followsR, K, P, S, T

    Illustration : A, P, R, X, S and Z are sitting in a row. S and Z are in the centre. A and P are at the ends. R is sitting to the left of A. Who is to the right of P ?

    A.  A                             B.  X                               C.  S                           D.  Z

    Answer : B

    Solution : As per the detail given in the question, S and Z are in the centre. A and P are at the ends. R is sitting to the left of O.

    Clearly, right of P is X
